The Route 79/I-195 Interchange reconstruction project was the final of five major projects in the MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program and has improved access between the waterfront and Route 79. Copley Wolff Design Group’s scope of work includes the creation of a new gateway to Fall River’s historic waterfront district. The gateway includes a shade structure, a plaza, and a large sign constructed of reclaimed granite.

Salvaged materials are integrated into seat walls and paving materials. Canopy trees and a diverse, low-maintenance plant material palette provides four-season interest within the space. Paying homage to the local Portuguese community, the gates to the city were designed to replicate the gates in the Portuguese city – Ponta Delgada. In addition, the Claudio War Monument was relocated to a fully accessible riverfront location in Bicentennial Park — increasing its visibility and enhancing the river walk experience.
