New Gathering Place Takes Shape in Plainville

Copley Wolff and Arrowstreet gathered at the completed Plainville Square beer garden to experience the first phase of a larger downtown vision.
A project photoshoot became an opportunity to put the newly completed Plainville Square food and beverage garden to the test.
Copley Wolff team members joined our Arrowstreet friends for a bus trip to Plainville, Massachusetts, where the project teams spent the evening experiencing the landscape as visitors will: gathering over food and drinks, playing games, and moving among the garden’s different outdoor spaces.
The beer garden is the first completed component of Jeff and Julie Kinney’s long-term plan to revitalize downtown Plainville. Their vision builds on the success of An Unlikely Story, the bookstore and event space they established nearby, by creating more reasons for residents and visitors to spend time downtown.
Designed as a flexible, interim use while the full Plainville Square master plan advances, the garden transforms a formerly vacant property into a community destination. Modified shipping containers accommodate food and beverage service and a performance stage. A central gathering area, decks, lawns, plantings, games, and informal seating support live music, pop-up programming, and everyday social activity.
Copley Wolff provided master planning and landscape architectural services in collaboration with Arrowstreet. The broader plan will continue to develop Plainville Square with a public park, amphitheater, play area, restaurant, market, event space, and additional outdoor gathering places.
The evening offered more than a chance to document the completed work. It allowed the teams that designed the beer garden to see it operating as intended: as a relaxed, social setting that brings people together.
