Beneath the newly constructed Green Line viaduct at Lechmere Station, Copley Wolff transformed previously underutilized land into a cohesive, inviting linear public space. In this densely developed part of East Cambridge, the project demonstrates how “found” space beneath urban infrastructure can provide opportunities for recreation and connection.
Designed in coordination with adjacent MBTA and MassDOT improvements, the park creates a more unified public realm and strengthens connections to the surrounding pedestrian and bicycle network. A realigned, approximately 12-foot-wide multi-use path improves safety and clarity while linking the Charles River pathway network with the Community Path to the north. An additional pedestrian route connects the park with Cambridge Crossing.
A playful dog park brings activity to the site with durable granite play elements, tunnels, seating, and a dog water fountain. Beyond the dog area, new lighting, paving, colorful seating, and sculptural fitness equipment make the heavily shaded space comfortable and inviting. Linear planting beds introduce native species, visual buffering and seasonal variation.
Interpretive elements reveal the site’s layered history as a former tidal estuary and later rail corridor. Reclaimed granite blocks uncovered during the Cambridge Crossing development provide seating and reference the area’s historic seawalls. Paving patterns and the alignment of the viaduct columns trace the former Green Line route, while raised green letters spelling “LECHMERE” celebrate the station’s identity and offer informal seating.
Together, these improvements turn overlooked infrastructure into a safe, engaging community asset for pedestrians, cyclists, neighbors, and their four-legged friends.
